Passwords. How many do you have? More importantly – how many do you actually remember? We have passwords and PIN codes for almost everything now – from the shopping loyalty cards to online bank access to our smart phones, tablets and computers. And the experts tell us that we should change our passwords or PINs every six months to help guard against hackers.
Seriously? Every six months? So that would mean, for me, I would have to come up with over 20 new passwords every year, just to prove to another computer that I am who I say I am. One of my passwords has around 20 random characters! I guess that’s why we are seeing the rise of internet companies who will think up our passwords for us. (No doubt, we will need a password to get into that web site as well!)
And if we can’t remember? We get a few tries and then we either get locked out or have to hassle through resetting the password.
In fact, companies are trying to get away from the password problem. The laptop I am writing this on has a fingerprint recognition scanner (But for security reasons, I will not tell you which finger!). My iPhone has a finger print scanner for access as well (again, I will not tell you which 3 fingers I have configured. Maybe I even used a toe!) We’ll see a wider range of ways that we can identify ourselves as we go along – retina, whole hand, elbows – who knows?
Here’s the cool thing for me. When it comes to communicating with God and enjoying His company, we don’t have to verify that we are who we are. “He knows our frame; He remembers we are dust,” Psalm 103;14. He already knows us!
And we don’t have to worry about firewalls or God blocking our talking with Him. Those walls, those gateways don’t exist with God. We have a straight pass through to God through Jesus Christ.
We don’t need to log on, sign in, verify our identity or answer security questions in our relationship with God. When Jesus forgives our sin, He writes our name down in the Book of Life, and that’s all the password we need!
